Chinese lanterns originated as a way to protect open flames but eventually became highly ornamental, and a status symbol. Now they are used to decorate big city and small town streets during festivals including the Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Lantern Festival.
Chinese lantern template
Colored construction paper
Tape (preferable double sided)
Glitter, magic markers, stickers, etc. for added decoration
Fold your paper in half lengthwise and draw a line one inch from the end of the long edge of the paper opposite the folded edge. Measure and mark lines one inch apart starting at the folded edge and moving towards the “stop cutting” line. Cut on the marked lines up to the line. Unfold the paper and tape the long edges of the lantern together. Use another strip of paper to make a handle and decorate as desired.
